My official career lasted just under 8 years but it feels so much longer. My first day working for an insurance company a month after I graduated from university was May 31st, 2010. D. started around the same time (although she was also handling a full course load and would graduate a year later).
It’s crazy to think that it’s only been 8 years. Most colleagues and clients I work with guessed that I was leaving our industry after 15 or 20 years. Many thought I was nearing 40 and this was a “mid life crisis” kind of thing. I obviously had a pretty strong impact in my short career so that is good.
I thought it would be so much fun to tell everyone we were quitting over the last month however it’s been kind of weird. It’s a very very difficult concept to explain to people. We dumbed it down a lot and said we would still work on some other projects we have but leaving “these jobs”. Everyone wonders “how can you live without 2 full time incomes”. We resist the urge to tell them that nobody really needs “2 full time incomes”.
Last week we said goodbye to Ottawa. We only had a car load of stuff left to move and after work on Friday we packed everything and headed to our new home! We’ve sold every piece of furniture we own and we’re living living out of 3 or 4 boxes and everyone was sleeping on an air mattresses. We got some good practice for our camping trip.
The new place looks amazing. It’s like a brand new house. The interior is about 99% complete and this week we are starting to work on making the outside look less shitty.
The Blog is 6 Months Old!
These last 6 months have really flown by because this blog is now 6 months old. So how has is it been doing? It has definitely surpassed my expectations. It’s not generating close to the amount of traffic as most successful blogs but when I started this, I told myself I’d be happy if 100 people checked it out eventually. In 6 months we’ve had 2100 unique visitors to the site for a total of 7000 page views.
The visitors and activity has been growing exponentially. The last 30 days has seen over 900 unique visitors with over 2000 page views. We only started a Twitter account a few months ago but we have 66 followers!
Now I just need to reduce the amount of spam comments we get (which also artificially inflates our numbers)…
We also recently launched a Facebook page. If you read one of our posts and you think your friends could benefit from it, please share it on Twitter or Facebook. We would really appreciate it.
